Jean Ryan, a native Vermonter, lives in coastal Alabama. Her writing has appeared in many journals and anthologies. Her debut collection of short stories, Survival Skills, was published by Ashland Creek Press and short-listed for a Lambda Literary Award. Lovers and Loners is her second story collection. She has also published a novel, Lost Sister, and a book of nature essays, Strange Company.
A note from the author:
Initially, I wrote literary fiction, mainly short stories. As time went on, I found myself drawn to poetry, intrigued by the challenge of uncovering the essence of a subject in just a few lines. What I prize most in any writer is the ability to distill experience by shearing off the unnecessary parts and leaving only clear and startling imagery. Words are keys, and the right ones in the right places unlock our minds and open us to wonder.
